Disaster Fund

Disaster preparedness

Thanks to our Disaster Fund we've responded immediately to a devastating earthquake in Haiti, releasing £200,000 to support the emergency response effort. Nobody can predict the exact location of the next flood, cyclone, earthquake or violent conflict. But when they happen, the British Red Cross must be ready to act within hours not days.

We recently responded to an earthquake in Malawi, releasing £15,000 to support the emergency shelter operation as well as drought in Kenya, releasing £149,000 to provide urgent humanitarian assistance for 15,000 families. We also responded to the flooding in Cumbria late last year, releasing £44,000 to support the recovery operation. If there is a large-scale outbreak of swine flu in the UK or overseas, the Disaster Fund will enable us to respond rapidly.

How your donation could help:

Water buckets

Kitchen kits for the population in Lebanon

In west Africa we used £58,000 to meet the sanitation needs of 5,000 people affected by severe floods in Burkina Faso. We also used £25,000 to buy tarpaulins, plastic buckets and sleeping mats for 400 families affected by flooding in Sierra Leone.

We have learned from experience that being prepared can play a major role in saving lives, protecting vital economic assets and safeguarding the livelihoods of vulnerable people.

Without the generosity of people like you, we wouldn't have been able to give £250,000 to provide food to people suffering from shortages in Ethiopia. By supporting our Disaster Fund, your money will be used as soon as it is needed, anywhere in the world.

Help us be ready in advance and save lives the next time disaster strikes, please make a donation today.
