The British Red Cross (BRC) and Magen David Adom UK have signed an agreement concerning their future relations.
The agreement, signed on June 21 at the London office of the British Red Cross, formalises the arrangement between the two organisations following the admission in 2006 of Magen David Adom, Israel's medical emergency and blood service, to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The agreement recognises "the valued role that Magen David Adom UK has played over the years as an independent actor in the humanitarian field," whilst aiming for Magen David Adom UK and BRC, "to move closer together to improve the service to those who require medical and other humanitarian support."
Magen David Adom UK will maintain its independence as a charity in the United Kingdom whilst developing closer links with the BRC. It will be able to draw on the experiences and knowledge offered by the BRC through the establishment of a liaison committee comprising three senior officials representing each organisation, which will meet regularly to discuss common issues.
The agreement was met with enthusiasm from Magen David Adom in Israel and it is anticipated that the new working arrangement will allow both parties to enhance the capacity of Magen David Adom Israel. This will be within a co-ordinated International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies framework and determined by the needs of Magen David Adom Israel. This could include support for developing Magen David Adom Israel¡¦s strategic plan, fundraising and communications within Israel, and guidance on developing Magen David Adom Israel's international operations.
It is also anticipated that Magen David Adom UK will co-operate with BRC in raising awareness and understanding of the Movement as a whole and of Magen David Adom Israel's position within the Movement, both within their respective volunteers and staff, and with the wider public.
Magen David Adom UK Chair, Stuart Glyn, commented, "It is significant that Magen David Adom UK and the British Red Cross have come together. We are sure that our working relationship will give rise to a greater sharing of knowledge and expertise allowing Magen David Adom in Israel to continue to save more lives."
BRC Chair, James Cochrane commented, "This is a further step towards the full integration of Magen David Adom in Israel into the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. We look forward to working with our colleagues from Magen David Adom to this end."
