Appeal will raise funds for countries significantly affected by the hurricane – to donate visit

The British Red Cross has launched an appeal to help the people devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

The deadly “superstorm” has caused devastation in the Caribbean and USA leaving tens of thousands of people homeless and killing at least 84.

·         In Cuba 75,000 people have been left homeless, with 15,000 homes destroyed

·         In Jamaica 17,000 people are affected and thousands homes have been damaged

·         In the Dominican Republic 17,500 people are displaced and 3,500 homes flooded

·         In Haiti 17,000 people were evacuated, and thousands of homes destroyed

·         In the USA 11,000 people were forced to flee and 7.5million were left without power

With hundreds of thousands of people still in urgent need of emergency support, the British Red Cross is appealing for funds to provide essentials such as food, water and shelter.

Money raised by the Hurricane Sandy Appeal will go to the areas with the greatest unmet need throughout the affected countries, where the Red Cross is working to save lives.

Mike Goodhand, Head of International Logistics at the British Red Cross, said: “Hurricane Sandy has ripped through communities from Port-au-Prince to New York, leaving chaos and devastation in its wake.

“The British public can help the Red Cross’s lifesaving work by donating to the Hurricane Sandy Appeal, which will tackle the impact of Sandy in the areas of greatest need.”

In the unlikely event that we raise more money than can be reasonably and efficiently spent, any surplus funds will be used to help us prepare for and respond to other humanitarian disasters anywhere in the world.

British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies.

We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.
