Red Cross responds to major incident in Kent

British Red Cross staff and volunteers responded to a request from Kent County Council this morning (5 September) to assist at a rest centre in Queensbourgh following a major multi-vehicle accident on the Sheppey crossing.
Three specially adapted Fire and Emergency Support Service (FES) vehicles and a catering support unit were deployed to assist in providing hot drinks, sandwiches and basic baby supplies to motorists who were stranded for several hours.
.A number of pop-up tents were also sent to the area to provide shelter from the sun.
Jane Roberts, operations director for the Red Cross in Kent and Sussex, said:
“A major issue today has been the weather. With so many people stranded for so long in the heat, unable to return to their vehicles, it was important that we were able to provide shelter and water, in the same way we do around the world.”
The Red Cross responds immediately to major emergencies both at home and overseas. From fires and floods in the UK to earthquakes and conflict around the world, we help people cope in crisis situations.

During 2012, in Kent and Sussex alone, our volunteer teams responded to 174 incidents helping 781 people faced with a personal crisis.
