As thousands in Nepal struggle in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake, British Red Cross has launched an emergency appeal.
The charity, which had an earthquake preparedness team in place in Kathmandu, has launched the appeal to bring in extra support, including much-needed food, shelter and medical equipment.
“This was a very powerful earthquake and its impact has been devastating. People are sleeping out in the open, too scared to return home while the aftershocks go on. Some have no home to return to,” said Alexander Matheou, British Red Cross Director of Programmes. “Search and rescue efforts are continuing, but some roads, especially in areas near the epicentre, have been damaged or blocked by landslides or rubble. We are extremely worried about these communities, especially those in Kathmandu Valley”.
Nepal Red Cross volunteers have been searching for survivors throughout the day and the organisation’s blood bank in Kathmandu is providing blood supplies to the main medical facilities in the capital. Red Cross volunteers have also been providing first aid to people injured by the earthquake.
Prior to the earthquake, British Red Cross together with Nepal Red Cross had worked on a three year earthquake preparedness programme, working in sixty-six communities across the Kathmandu valley to show people what to do before, during and after earthquakes.

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.
