Canon partners with British Red Cross for young person's photography competition

15 July 2015

Canon, the imaging specialist, has partnered with the British Red Cross for this year’s Humanitarian Citizenship Awards photography competition. This is the second year the competition has run, and will aim to build on the outstanding range of talented entries in 2014.

This year also marks the tenth anniversary of Canon’s partnership with the British Red Cross through its official sponsorship of the Humanitarian Citizenship Awards. The awards are aimed at celebrating the extraordinary contributions that young people make in helping others across Britain.

Robin Wells, youth development co-ordinator at the British Red Cross, said: “The Red Cross is committed to helping people in crisis and this exciting and creative category is part of our Humanitarian Citizen Awards, which recognise the contributions young people, under-26, perform in their communities.”

The photography competition has now launched and the winners will be offered some fabulous prizes from Canon. The British Red Cross is accepting entries at

“Our competition theme this year is ‘Celebrating your community’. Often, humanitarian action starts at the heart of communities, and we are asking young people to reflect this in their photography. Through this theme, we want to encourage young people to celebrate their own communities, and the contributions made by communities and individuals within them.” Robin explained.

There are two age categories, 17 and under, and 18 to 25. The overall winners in both categories will each receive an EOS 760D plus lens. Four runners-up will find themselves clicking away with a Canon compact camera.

Bob Pickles, Director of Public Sector Business Development and Public Affairs said: “We’re thrilled to be supporting the Humanitarian Citizenship Awards photography competition for the second year, and are proud to celebrate ten years of our successful partnership with the British Red Cross. We look forward to seeing all the imaginative ways the theme of ‘communities’ is captured through the power of imagery and how this competition inspires more young photographers.”

Nominations for this special category can be made until the 20 September and young people do not need any connection to the Red Cross to be nominated for an award. The full list of winners will be announced at a prestigious ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on the 24 November 2015.

Notes to editors

We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.
