His Honour Judge Elgan Edwards has been appointed president of the British Red Cross in Cheshire, a voluntary role where he will help promote the work of the Red Cross in the area.
Elgan Edwards, who lives in Chester with his wife Carol, is a Senior Circuit Judge and Honorary Recorder of Chester. He is a Deputy Lieutenant of Cheshire and is also President of the Cheshire branch of the Magistrates’ Association. A fellow of the University of Aberystwyth and Bencher of Gray’s Inn, he is also a former sheriff of the City of Chester and is a Freeman of the City of London.
A keen fundraiser, Elgan Edwards is also a previous president of the Countess of Chester Hospital Breast Care Appeal and last year organised a ball for the Mercian Regiment Benevolent Fund and Help for Heroes which raised £50,000.
According to Elgan Edwards a key part of his new role at the Red Cross will be to make more people aware of the work the Red Cross does in the UK: “Like most people I associated the British Red Cross with the great work that they do overseas. It wasn’t until I took on this role that I realised that the Red Cross does an enormous amount in the UK, providing much needed services for vulnerable members of the community including the elderly, the disabled and the sick as well as those who have suffered from tragic events through no fault of their own.
“I think it’s very important that the people of Cheshire realise what a great organisation the Red Cross is and that it needs as much support as possible to continue its good work in the county.”
Elgan Edwards said he was particularly impressed by the work of the Red Cross fire and emergency support volunteers who support people in a specially adapted vehicle after damage to their homes following flood, fire or a similar incident.
Elgan will work closely with Barbara-Anne Walker operations director for Cheshire. The Red Cross offers a variety of services in Cheshire including: emergency response, fire and emergency support, medical equipment loan, care in the home and first aid courses.
Previously the role of Cheshire president was held by Hilary Farnworth who retired in September 2010.
Notes to editors
The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies.
We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on
with their lives.
