A British Red Cross service in Fleet has been given a new lease of life thanks to a donation of £1,600 from the County Councillor grant budget.

The Medical Equipment service provides short-term loans of medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and bathing aids, helping people regain their independence after an operation, illness or accident.

The service has received a welcome boost to its resources thanks to the generous donation by Fleet councillors Sharyn Wheale and Jenny Radley. On 19th April, the councillors met the staff and volunteers who run the service at the Red Cross centre in Fleet to see first hand what the money is being used for.

After the visit, Cllr Radley said: “It was really good to talk to the dedicated volunteers and find out more about the important services that they provide for local people. I am pleased that local county council members have been able to help support the Red Cross to up-grade their all-important supply of wheelchairs this year. This is so important because the Health Service is not able to provide free wheelchairs for temporary use to patients and elderly residents.”

The money is being used to purchase 13 standard wheelchairs that are easy for older people and children to use. It will also upgrade its existing fleet of wheelchairs and other medical equipment so it can continue to provide a high quality service to those who need it.

Red Cross medical loan co-ordinator Julie Yardley said: "Many people who come to us never expected to need to borrow a wheelchair, but when an accident or illness keeps them off their feet, they find our service incredibly valuable.

"We're very grateful to the councillors for their kind donations, which will enable us to buy several more wheelchairs and help even more people in the community when they find themselves unable to get around."

As well as wheelchairs, the service also provides other equipment including bath seats, commodes and walking frames. The centre, which is based in Clarence Road in Fleet, is open Monday to Friday between 10.30am and 12 noon.
