Have you got a bag of unwanted Christmas presents cluttering the hall? Or are you planning a New Year clear out? If so the British Red Cross is encouraging people to donate items to their local Red Cross charity shops.

From toys to textiles and gifts to glassware, the Red Cross shops are desperate for donations.

Every item sold helps vulnerable people in crisis both here in the UK and abroad.

Gareth Morgan, Red Cross general manager for retail for the south of the country says: “We are encouraging our donors and customers to think of us when they have items to donate, and come and see what fantastic bargains we have in store this month at the same time.

“This will be invaluable in topping up depleted stocks after our busy and successful Christmas period, whilst ensuring we keep those tills ringing in the quieter post- Christmas period.

“Come along and check out your local shop, donate stock or perhaps think about becoming a volunteer – all will enable the British Red Cross to help vulnerable people in a crisis.”

Donating items could not be easier. Simply take them to your nearest shop and hand them over to Red Cross staff. If that is not convenient check our website for your local shop telephone number and we can often arrange for one of our Red Cross van drivers to collect it from your home.

You can make the Red Cross 25 per cent more income from selling your items if you are happy to Gift Aid your donation. Simply sign-up in the store when you donate goods.

All donations must be clean, useable and of saleable quality. The better the quality of the item the more money the Red Cross can raise from their sale.

Red Cross shops are a vital source of funds to continue supporting the work of the Red Cross. With more than 330 shops across the UK, they are responsible for approximately 11 per cent of total British Red Cross fundraising.

As well as selling second-hand clothes, shoes and accessories, Red Cross shops also stock CDs, books, bric-a-brac and there is also a range of specialist furniture stores.
