As the long-awaited first signs of spring finally begin to flourish, the British Red Cross in Herefordshire will be celebrating at its annual fundraiser – the Great Spring Gardening Event.
Tickets are still available for the event which takes place on Wednesday 24 April at the private Whitfield Estate in Wormbridge, Herefordshire. The Whitfield Estate is not generally open to members of the public and so the event will offer a great opportunity for visitors to enjoy the beauty of its parkland and private gardens.
Now in its sixteenth year, the Great Spring Gardening Event is highly regarded and recognised as an important occasion on both the horticultural and social calendar. This year, the event has been listed on the notable Debrett’s social season, running alongside prestigious events such as the Chelsea Flower Show and Royal Ascot.
Jules Hudson, television presenter and Herefordshire resident, is supporting the event. He said: “For me, gardening is my great escape and something I can do creatively. Gardeners love to share both their gardens and experiences and events such as this are a great opportunity to celebrate traditions we love.”
Gardener, writer and television presenter, Sarah Raven, has also donated 3,000 packets of seeds to help with the charity’s fundraising efforts.
Despite inclement weather, last year’s event, held at Berrington Hall, Leominster, raised over £22,000 for the Red Cross. In 2011, the total sum was just over £34,000 and it is hoped that a similar amount can be achieved this year.
Sue Burleigh, senior community fundraiser at the Red Cross in Herefordshire, said: “We are all very excited about this year’s Great Spring Gardening Event. If the work that the organising committee has put into the preparation is anything to go by, this year’s event is going to be bigger and more successful than ever before. We have a fabulous venue and some fantastic activities planned. It really will be a great day out for everyone.”
All the money raised from the event will be used to fund the work of the Red Cross.
The annual gardening event will feature over 100 suppliers, nurseries, corporate supporters and sponsors who will provide an array of garden related items, plants, country clothing and outdoor lifestyle ranges.
The event runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Wednesday 24 April 2013. Admission is £7.00 per person at the entrance gate or £6.00, in advance, via www.redcross.org.uk/gardeningevent. Ticket price includes entrance to the event and some of the private gardens.
A limited number of pre-booked, two course lunches are available with reserved seating in a private area of the main catering marquee. The price of £30 each includes entry to the event.

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to unexpected events from conflicts and natural disasters to individual emergencies. We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.
