The British Red Cross charity shop in Newtown, Powys has been given a shiny new makeover by two teams of Tesco staff in an Apprentice-style challenge.
Twenty-two Tesco staff worked flat out from 9am to 5pm to transform the shop, including painting the interior and putting up new shelves in the back room sorting areas. They even revamped the kitchen so that hard-working charity shop volunteers have somewhere nice to have a cup of tea while they take a breather from their work raising vital funds for the Red Cross.
Boys against girls
The Tesco staff, many of whom have been volunteering in the shop in recent weeks while they wait for a new Tesco store to open, were split into the all-girls ‘Team Valentine’ and all-boys ‘Roller With It’ teams. Pitting their decorative wits against each other, this was a challenge of brains, brawn and creativity.
Matthew France, Tesco store manager in Newtown, said: “My staff really enjoyed helping out at the Red Cross charity shop. It was a great opportunity to get out in the community and help a great cause.”
Special thanks also go to Red Cross shop staff and volunteers who put in lots of hard work before, during and after the challenge too – preparing the shop for its refit, joining the Tesco teams on the day and re-designing the layout afterwards to get it ready for re-opening.
Donations make a difference
The charity shop relies on donations from members of the public to raise money to help people in crisis in the UK and abroad. Clothing, gifts, housewares, books and DVDs can all be converted into income for the Red Cross.
The Red Cross runs a number of services in Powys. Trained volunteers respond to emergencies – from major incidents to transport accidents, evacuations, floods and fires. Trainers teach life-saving first aid skills to people so they can respond to emergencies in their communities, and the care in the home service helps people in their own homes following a hospital stay.
