A massive earthquake has hit Chile. Red Cross volunteers and staff are on the ground helping people caught up in the disaster.

The 8.3 magnitude earthquake hit Chile at 7.56pm hours local time yesterday, 46 km from the town of Illapel in the north of the country.

Local Red Cross teams have helped with evacuations, and begun to check the scale of the damage.

The Chilean Red Cross warned aftershocks may bring further damage, but said that people had left their homes in an orderly and organised manner.
