Red Cross launches Saturday night fundraising campaign to help victims of attacks

London landmarks are pledging to support the British Red Cross’s Saturday Night for London fundraising drive to support the victims of terror attacks. Theatres, hotels and the View from the top of the Shard have all joined the plan to urge people to come together during a Saturday Night for London to mark one week on from the London Bridge terror attacks and raise money for those affected.

The charity is working with organisations across the capital calling on people to take a Ride for London, eat a Dish for London and say Cheers for London to help raise money for the victims of the attacks and their families.

The campaign is being backed by Borough Market, where the attack ended last weekend, and many of the restaurants and outlets in the area will be supporting the fundraising. 

All proceeds will go to the British Red Cross UK Solidarity Fund. This fund has been launched in response to the recent horrific events in London and Manchester.  The funds will go to help those victims of terror attacks in need anywhere in the UK, in the first instance, in London.

Saturday Night for London is being supported by:

  • Borough Wines & Beers, who will be donating £1 for every wine refill sold in their London shops on Saturday. Other outlets there will also be taking part. The chair of Borough Market has described the campaign as “a forceful reminder to those who sought to divide us”.
  • The Society of London Theatre is co-ordinating bucket collections and donations from member theatres. They are also donating £1 on every ticket sold at TKTS, their official London theatre booth in Leicester Square. Collections will also be held at the production of Don Juan, starring David Tennant, at Wyndham's theatre in London.
  • 260 Greene King pubs and Loch Fyne restaurants in London, who will be donating £1 for every dish of fish and chips sold on the night and encouraging customers to donate.
  • Uber is pledging to donate £1 for every trip taken in London this Saturday night (between 8pm and midnight). More than 1 million Uber rides are taken in the capital each week with Saturday night the busiest night of the week. Uber refunded all trips from the areas around the attacks last Saturday night. This weekend it will also encourage people to donate to the fund with a special pop up message in its app.
  • Deliveroo will be making a £1 donation for every single order placed across London on Saturday evening from 6pm onwards.
  • All Pizza Express restaurants within the M25 will be donating £1 for every pizza sold from 5pm this Saturday.
  • Pret A Manger will be supporting this Saturday from their shops local to the area, encouraging customers to donate to the fund.
  • The chain Eat will encourage customers to donate the price of a coffee, displaying posters in its stores across London. 
  • Thomasina Miers’ Mexican restaurant group Wahaca will be donating £1 for every plate of their classic pork pibil tacos to the fund this Saturday at all of their restaurants in London as well as at Wahaca Manchester.
  • PAUL will be making a donation from every Coq au Vin dish sold at their Covent Garden restaurant on Saturday night.
  • LEON will donate £1 per every Chicken and Chorizo Club Hot Box sold in any LEON restaurant across the weekend.
  • The View from the Top of the Shard will donate £1 from every ticket sold to its Silent Disco on Saturday night and will hold collections throughout the night.
  • Nightrider charity bike ride will be supporting the appeal with collections at their event this weekend in London.
  • The Vodafone Foundation will match** all donations made via JustTextGiving to the UK Solidarity Fund by Monday 19 June. To donate £10, please text HELP99 10 to 70070.
  • Iconic London bars, hotels and restaurants that are coming together to support Saturday Night for London include: Sky Garden near Monument; Nobu in Mayfair; Hilton Hotels in London; Corinthia Hotel London in Westminster; HIX Mayfair at Brown's Hotel; Aqua in the Shard; The Garrison in Bermondsey; all three Barrafinas and Quo Vadis; Caravan Bankside; Look Mum No Hands; The Test Kitchen by Adam Simmonds in Soho; Alba and Arthur's Pizza in Twickenham; Eneko at One Aldwych; Green Goose in Bow; Pall Mall Fine Wine and The London Beer House in St James’; Pavilion Wine in Chelsea; Mosimann’s in Westminster; Shepherd Market Wine House in Mayfair; Traders Wine in Tower Bridge and Walkers of Whitehall in Westminster; ETM group including The Botanist, The Jugged Hare, Aviary and Greenwood and Jumeriah Hotels.
  • The Dorchester will be donating the proceeds from any soufflé ordered from The Grill at The Dorchester’s dedicated sweet soufflé menu on Saturday night.
  • The Original Tour will donate £1 from every ticket sold on-street on Saturday.
  • Significant donations from: Tesco; RBS; Morrison’s and The Morrison’s Foundation, who are also arranging national bucket collections across the country.

More supporters from the London Bridge area, across the capital and the country will be announced in the coming days.

Donations to the UK Solidarity Fund

The UK Solidarity Fund has seen strong support since it launched on Sunday, including: 

  • Virgin Atlantic, who are doing on board collections and Virgin Holidays are collecting donations through their online page, symbolising London’s connection with the world.
  • Significant donations have been received from Aviva, TJX Europe (TK Maxx and HomeSense) and Sage Foundation.
  • More than 17 national and London news outlets have donated free advertising space to promote the fund, including Bauer Media and Wireless radio networks and Westfield shopping centre has arranged for its digital billboards to publicise the appeal.

The UK Solidarity Fund will be allocated in accordance with the need and scale of human crisis caused by terrorist attacks in this country. With a separate fund currently successfully raising funds for the victims of the Manchester bombing it is anticipated that in the first instance the UK Solidarity Fund will help victims of Saturday’s attack in London.

The grants in London will be awarded by the London Emergencies Trust, mirroring a model that was successfully employed following the London Bombings in July 2005 and after the Westminster attack in March.

British Red Cross Disaster Relief Alliance partners Tesco, Aviva, Kingfisher and John Lewis Partnership have donated to the appeal through the charity’s disaster fund.

Mike Adamson, Chief Executive of the British Red Cross said: “It’s fantastic to see London coming together to support the people affected by terror attacks.

“The attack in London Bridge and people enjoying a Saturday night out with friends was an attack on the spirit of London. We want to encourage people to come together and unite at this difficult time.

“We have already raised over £700,000 to help victims of the attacks and their families, and we want to provide a way for people to donate to help those affected in their time of need. Thank you London.”

Donald Hyslop, Chair of Trustees at Borough Market said: “Borough Market is not just a collection of stalls, restaurants and pubs; it is a community of people. Never has that been more apparent than it is now, in this darkest of hours. This community has been shaken to its core by Saturday’s horrific events, but bolstered by the love, togetherness and defiance of this vibrant, diverse city it will carry on doing what it has always done: celebrating the pleasures of good food and conversation.

Amy Lamé, who was appointed the London Night Czar last year by the London Mayor Sadiq Khan, said: “London’s nightlife is its heart and soul. A Saturday night for London, a week after the terrible attacks at London Bridge, is a chance for people to show the unity and resilience of this great city and the generosity of Londoners in getting out and raising money to help the survivors, the victims and their families.

“Last Saturday night people were having a drink, a meal, or travelling through the area when the attack happened. We must continue our way of life, so this Saturday we are asking you to take a Ride for London, order a Dish for London, or say Cheers to London with a pint or a cup of tea as a way of raising money to help all those affected. It is a very fitting way to help.”
