Photo gallery: post-war health and social care

In 1946, the British Red Cross set up a department for welfare services to address the growing needs throughout the country. Volunteers and staff helped out in military and civilian hospitals, helped run out-patient canteens, maintained medical equipment depots and oversaw handicrafts groups to help patients take their minds off their illnesses. They also worked with disabled children in clinics and regularly visited children in hospital and in their own homes.
