Liverpool Asylum Outreach and Support Project

In Liverpool, the Red Cross, working in partnership with Refugee Action and Asylum Link Merseyside, has developed a five-year project to support asylum seekers at risk of, or experiencing, destitution. This project has been supported by the Big Lottery Fund with a grant of £496,081.

Volunteers and staff from the three agencies work together to meet the needs of asylum seekers. They provide information sessions, courses and one-to-one complex casework support as well as practical support: vouchers, clothing and food.

What the project provides

  • Group information sessions, providing information on the asylum determination process, rights and eligibility for support.
  • First aid courses, in particular focusing on trends of health (physical and mental) that this group faces.
  • Material support for destitute asylum seekers and casework support for asylum seekers who have complex needs such as mental and physical health issues, disabilities and/or a serious illness.
  • Targeted advocacy and awareness-raising activities, helping local agencies to meet the complex needs of asylum seekers.
