Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have contributed £1 million over the past five years to a range of British Red Cross supported projects around the world.
Projects supported by players of the lottery include the HIV project in KwaZulu-Natal (2014), a food security and livelihoods project in Zimbabwe (2015), community resilience project in Zimbabwe (2016), the Lake Chad crisis, reproductive health programme in Guinea and the disaster management programme in Sierra Leone (2017).
The players of People's Postcode Lottery are continuing to support the community resilience project in Zimbabwe with an additional £250,000 in funding for this year. The aim of the programme is to ensure that these communities are better able to anticipate, respond to and recover from disasters and crises.
In Guinea, players are supporting a programme that aims to increase knowledge of and access to reproductive health and rights, with particular emphasis on women of reproductive age, children and young people. The programme also aims to improve the quality of existing health services, providing training to health workers and piloting an innovative ‘Safe Delivery’ maternal health app.
In Sierra Leone, players are supporting a disaster management programme that aims to provide communities with the knowledge, skills, and resources required to respond to disasters including epidemics and floods.
Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery said: “We are incredibly proud that players of People’s Postcode Lottery have awarded a total of £1 million to support the British Red Cross with their projects in sub Saharan Africa. Thank you to our players for their fantastic support.”
