What would make you step onto an inflatable dinghy to undertake a treacherous journey across the sea, a journey you might never complete?
Extreme poverty? Persecution? War?
Thousands of families are choosing this terrifying option every day. They are fleeing unimaginable horrors across the Middle East and North Africa. They know the risks. They know they might lose their lives on this crossing.
The danger they face on this journey is a safer option than the fate that awaits them at home.
This year alone, more than 3,200 people are known to have lost their lives trying to make the perilous crossing. That number is likely to be far higher, in reality.
We desperately need your help to keep our rescue boats out at sea, saving lives. Standing by and watching people drown is simply not an option.
Please donate today.
The British Red Cross, in partnership with the Italian Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS), is supporting the search and rescue boats, The Responder and The Phoenix.
Red Cross medics on board each boat are giving first aid, food, water, clothes and blankets to rescued men, women and children.
