The idea of a garden opposite Poplars Farm house came one day in October 1983 at breakfast time. William my son was cultivating the field of 60 acres, and had nearly finished at a point
opposite the farmhouse, when I realised I did not wish to look at bare cultivated ground all winter. Immediately I decided to take out three acres of the field and the garden idea was born.
On November 2nd, this area was grassed with a
farm grass mixture and the Arboretum idea came about as probably more interesting than a formal garden. 1,200 trees were planted to enable me to plan the eventual design. The Garden today now has 74 species of trees at various stages of growth.
There is the American War Memorial found to the
east of the Garden, near the apple orchard. In May 2000, a memorial plaque was dedicated to the Crew of an American Flying Fortress, Miss Liberty Belle, which crashed on this site 4th August 1944. The two sole survivors came over for the Ceremony, which was attended by the BBC Look East film team and American Service members from the surrounded Bases. It is
Registered with The American War Graves Authority.
Teas will be served from a purpose built log cabin which overlooks the beautiful rose garden.
