This atmospheric garden rises gently along its length with steps and slopes up into the different areas. There are soft muted colours on the terraces behind the house in blue, pink and white. Drama is added by a huge Magnolia ‘Maryland’ in a pot, which sports scented, creamy, bowls of fl owers. A vigorous bamboo screens a neighbour’s house and a lavender hedge adds a spicy scent.
Two pots of standard Bay mark the entrance to a space with a greenhouse and pots of colourful plants. A stainless steel, scimitar- shaped sculpture shows well
against a box hedge. The long lawned area marks a change of mood to calm and green. White bark of a large silver birch, white fl owers of Akebia quinata ‘Alba’ and Clematis armandii on a trellis opposite, privet balls on tall stems and a soft yellow rose are the only colours here.
Under an arch, the ‘Fire Garden’ raises the temperature. A gravel path winds between beds fi lled with brilliant red, purple, orange and yellow roses, perennials and climbers. It is a relief to step up between balls of silver variegated hollies under an arch of Rosa ‘Vielchenblau’ to a calm terrace with a shining, sinuous sculpture called ’The Ludlow Angel’ by Cornish
artist Tom Leaper.
