The British Red Cross is looking to appoint a trustee who will advise on strategic communications, including marketing, brand promotion and awareness.
The ideal candidate would possess communications experience in the commercial context, preferably with an exposure to the public or voluntary sector as well.
We are also looking to elect a new trustee from among our volunteers to join the board. We are especially looking for a volunteer with relevant, personal or professional experience of working with refugees and asylum seekers.
This is a key strategic priority for the British Red Cross and the board is keen for its membership to reflect experience in this area. Candidates who apply should have volunteered with the British Red Cross for more than the last 12 months.
Who we are looking for
The board values diversity and is committed to ensuring it is representative of the communities it serves. We are very keen to receive applications from sections of community who are under-represented in our governance bodies, such as black and minority ethnic (BAME).
The trustee roles are voluntary but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
We are looking for people with passion, energy and commitment, willing to be internal and external ambassadors for the organisation.
Candidates should demonstrate:
- a commitment to the Fundamental Principles, vision, mission and values of the British Red Cross and the wider international Movement
- an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
- a commitment to the seven principles of public life – selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
The successful candidates will join a board of 13 trustees, which meets four times a year.
The average time commitment is expected to be around 10 days a year.
Trustees can serve up to two terms of four years each, subject to a review by the chair at the end of the first term.

Volunteers applying for the elected trustee position should also include a summary statement of eligibility which, if shortlisted, will be used as the candidate’s election manifesto to the National Electoral College.
Closing date for receipt of completed application forms is 16 July 2017. Interviews will be held on 8 August (elected trustees) and 9 August (co-opted trustee) 2017.
Reasonable costs for attending interviews will be reimbursed as per the organisation’s expenses policy.
The governance and nominations committee, appointed by the board, oversees the trustee recruitment process comprising advertisement, shortlisting and interview.
The successful candidate will be recommended for appointment to the board in October 2017, and the new trustee will join the board on 1 January 2018.
