The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement's response to the Haiti earthquake was its biggest operation since the 2004 tsunami. On 13 January 2010, the British Red Cross launched the Haiti Earthquake Appeal. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the Red Cross received £23 million for its Haiti operation, with funds raised from its own appeal as well as the Disasters Emergency Committee and the Department for International Development.
In the aftermath of the disaster:
© InfoThe Red Cross distributed food and other relief items to thousands of families for months after the earthquake. We gave emergency shelter materials to 172,700 families - that's 307,000 tarpaulins and more than 9,000 tents.
- More than 20 Red Cross emergency response units (ERU) from around the world provided expert assistance with water and sanitation, logistics, IT and telecommunication infrastructure, health facilities and medical aid. As part of this response the British Red Cross deployed its logistics ERU and its mass sanitation ERU.
- The Red Cross treated more than 216,000 people in its hospitals and clinics, and vaccinated more than 152,000 people against measles, diphtheria and tetanus.
- Around 265,400 people were given access to sanitation facilities by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) set up a special family links website to help people get in touch with their loved ones. More than 29,000 people registered with the family links website and the Red Cross facilitated more than 2,200 phone calls for people eager to reach their relatives abroad.
- A British Red Cross psycho-social support team was sent to Port-au-Prince with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, to provide practical help and emotional support to Britons affected by the earthquake.
