Ethiopia Food Crisis Appeal

Lack of access to food and clean water in Ethiopia has put at risk the health of thousands of people, particularly children under five, the elderly, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

Drought and escalating food prices have forced vulnerable households to sell their livestock and agricultural tools at throw-away prices in order to buy food. The number of people needing emergency assistance is already high and could rise considerably in the coming months.

Although there have been recent rains, they came too late for the last harvest. It is now time to start planting again but many households have sold their tools and have had to eat their seeds.

The Red Cross has already been distributing food and seeds but more help is needed.

Over the next few months, the Red Cross will continue to provide emergency food relief as well as improving access to safe water and promoting hygiene education.

How your donation could help:

Water buckets
£15 could help provide 40,000 litres of clean drinking water.
Ethiopian Red Cross volunteer helps during a food distribution
£33 could provide food rations such as maize and beans to feed a family of 5 for a month.

The Ethiopian government estimates that 4.7 million people are affected, but the UN considers this a low estimate. Continued action is needed to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.
