History and origin

Beginning of the Movement

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement started more than 135 years ago.
 

First World War

British Red Cross and the Order of St John formed the Joint War Committee following the outbreak of war.
 

Creation of a peacetime role

The League of Red Cross Societies (now the IFRC) was formed and extended the role of national Red Cross societies.
 

Second World War

The Red Cross provided services for the sick and wounded, prisoners of war and civilians needing relief.
