Supporting vulnerable women in Kyrgyzstan

Project summary

After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Kyrgyzstan saw an enormous rise in unemployment, poverty and hardship.Women have been particularly affected. The crippling poverty experienced by many families has prevented girls from receiving an education, making it difficult for them to find jobs or provide for themselves or their families.Map of Kyrgyzstan 1 © Reuters / courtesy www.alertnet.org
Even when women are able to find work, they are often stopped from taking it because of a growing belief in Kyrgyz society that a woman’s place is at home.

Unable to fulfil their family duties they often become victims of domestic violence. A lack of education and poor job prospects mean rising numbers of women turn to prostitution, drug peddling and being trafficked for sex in order to feed their families.

Women around table, Kyrgyzstan 2 © IFRCThe British Red Cross is supporting the Kyrgyzstan Red Crescent in running education and vocational training courses to give vulnerable women access to recognised qualifications that will help them find jobs, earn a living to better support their

families, and become more integrated in everyday society. We need to raise £27,000 to ensure that this work can continue.

Project details

The project will improve the social and economic position of 1,600 of the most vulnerable women living in the Kyrgyz towns of Osh, Jalalabad and Bishkek by strengthening their skills in sewing or computing and teaching them about their basic rights.

£27,000 will fund:

  • sewing courses for 600 women
  • computing courses in Bishek for 200 women
  • training for 800 women in first aid and family health

Trainees attend a 30 hour programme, following a curriculum developed by the Kyrgyzstan Red Crescent, providing them with education and information on areas such as first aid, health and family planning.

Trainees also attend a course in basic business and communication skills to support the practical work they have learned and help them find employment or start a business themselves once they graduate.Women working in factory, Kyrgyzstan 3 © IFRC

Of the 2,566 women receiving vocational training since 2003, 87% have been employed or are self-employed, and speak of raised self-confidence.

Please give generously and help change lives.

We value the support we receive very highly. The Red Cross has a permanent presence in communities across the world through our sister National Societies. We can therefore provide assurances that our donations are secure.

We invite supporters to become as involved in our work as they wish to, so they understand the impact their contribution makes to the lives of the people we help. We want our supporters to feel as much of a sense of ownership and pride in the Red Cross as we do.
