TESCO donation bolsters Red Cross response to Yorkshire flooding
Clothing and other essential items donated by TESCO has contributed significantly to the British Red Cross’ ongoing response to the severe flooding affecting Yorkshire and surrounding areas. A significant portion of a donation worth ten thousand pounds to support Red Cross emergency response work, has been distributed to hundreds of people forced from their homes who are staying in rest centres in Doncaster and Sheffield.
Tony Thompson, Head of UK Emergency Response and Resilience at the British Red Cross, says: “The British Red Cross is extremely grateful to TESCO for this donation which will help us meet the needs of people evacuated from their homes. Many people were forced to leave at short notice without sufficient time to pack things like toiletries or extra clothing. These items will at least go some way to providing comfort in these difficult circumstances.”
The distribution is part of the British Red Cross’ continuing response to the flooding. Red Cross volunteers have been providing emotional and practical help to people affected by the flooding at rest centres in Sheffield and Doncaster, and a fire and emergency support vehicle has been assisting the emergency services with the evacuation of people from their homes in Lincolnshire. The British Red Cross has also spent £2500 from its Disaster Fund on 30 beds for elderly people staying at rest centres in Doncaster.
The British Red Cross responds to hundreds of emergencies every year and has a special role to play in supporting the emergency services. The organisation is included in local authority emergency plans for every part of the UK and will remain on standby ready to offer support where needed. The British Red Cross is the Tesco Charity of the Year. Together Tesco and the British Red Cross hope to raise £2million to help people in crisis throughout the UK. ENDS
The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.
