Katie Melua learns first aid with the Red Cross

29 February 2008

Katie Melua, whose Christmas single – What A Wonderful World – raised thousands for the British Red Cross, recently spent the day with us learning life-saving skills.

John Lewis, the first aid trainer who taught Katie first aid, also taught her band members, technicians and tour manager. John said: “To be asked to work with Katie Melua, who just a couple of months ago released a number one single to raise money for the Red Cross is just amazing. And now she’s learning first aid with us - it just shows how much she truly supports the Red Cross.”

John added: “Teaching Katie was like teaching any other student. She was so down to earth and really easy to work with.”Katie Melua

In addition to basic first aid skills, Katie asked John if he could focus on how to treat electrical injuries, which could come in handy while on tour.

Saving lives

Katie said: “I really enjoyed learning first aid with the Red Cross and feel proud to have these new skills that could make a real difference if someone was in trouble. I hope I’ll be able to put them to good use if I ever need to. Learning first aid saves lives and anyone can do it!”

John said: “Katie thanked me personally at the end of the day and said she was really glad she had done the training. As a thank you she invited me to go to one of her concerts in the autumn. Of course I jumped at the chance – I already have all her albums.”

First aid training pays off

The following day, John received an email from one of Katie’s group. As some of Katie’s band members were travelling home on the tube in London after the day’s training, the driver of the train spoke on the tannoy, asking for any passenger who knew first aid, to make their way to the front carriage. Without a second thought, one of the band members rushed to the front of the train to help a man who suffered a seizure.

John said: “Knowing that he felt confident enough to know what to do thanks to his Red Cross training was the icing on the cake.”
