Middle East Crisis Appeal launched
| | | The British Red Cross has launched an appeal to help people affected by the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the Middle East.
More than half a million people have been forced to leave their homes due to the upsurge in violence in Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian territories.
| Thousands of Britons are being evacuated from Lebanon and hundreds of civilians, including many children, have been killed in the region. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is providing vital medical support, tents and blankets among other relief items, wherever it may be needed.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which works in conflict areas, is coordinating the humanitarian response by working through a number of National Societies in the region, including the Lebanese Red Cross, Syrian Red Crescent, Palestinian Red Crescent and Magen David Adom (Israel).
The British Red Cross appeal will support the work of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in the region to help those most in need. Please give what you can today.
Help for evacuees
Thirteen British Red Cross delegates have been helping Britons evacuated to Cyprus from Lebanon.
Team leader Stephen Spurling said: “People have made a long journey in very hot conditions. It’s been a difficult journey, some have young children who’ve been seasick, others have left medication at home and have needed to see the medical staff here.”
The delegates are working at the request of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), which is responsible for providing consular assistance to Britons overseas. They have been assisting Britons with travel arrangements, accommodation and ensuring that any health care needs are dealt with. The team has also provided comfort to anyone traumatised by their experience.
