Desperate for help, Olani recently contacted the British Red Cross, whose family reunion assistance programme helps to bring together families who have been separated around the world. After much hard work, the family’s long, sad story finally reached a happy ending at Heathrow Airport on 5 November with their reunion.
Dangerous situation
Looking back on his traumatic experience, Olani remembered: “I was separated from my family for three long years. There was no good or dependable way for me to get in touch with them and, besides, it was a bit risky for them to speak to me.
“It has been really stressful living without my wife and daughters for so long. It’s very hard to be apart from your family, especially when they are in a dangerous and threatening situation. I wasn’t able to help or support them while they were being intimidated because of my political situation. I was so worried, not knowing what was going to happen next.”
Together again
But with their airport reunion, all their past troubles suddenly seemed to melt away. The proud father said: “When I first saw my family again, it was such a rewarding time – a big chapter in my life. It was so great to see them and have my whole family together again. My daughters have grown quite a bit too!
And now that he is settled, Olani will remember those who stepped forward when all seemed lost. He said: “The Red Cross has been fantastic – if not for their help, I would have had no other option. I am really satisfied with all their support, and so grateful for their help to me and my family. I’d just like to say ‘Thanks a lot’. They were a real friend when I was in need.”
