Shops break record in two-week extravaganza

12 December 2008

British Red Cross shops smashed their fundraising record during this year’s £1 million fortnight – raising well over £1.2 million during the two-week shopping extravaganza.

“We’re delighted this year’s event was such a record breaker. It’s a wonderful figure, more than four per cent higher than last year,” Paul Thompson, general manager – retail, said.

“I’d like to congratulate everyone involved, they’re all stars. The public really came out to support their local shops and the Red Cross.”

Shops around the country held special events between November 24 and December 7 to encourage local residents to get shopping.

A designer sale at the Kensington and Chelsea shop in London raised £16,221 in just five hours, with shoppers snapping up cut-price items including Jimmy Choo evening boots and an Ossie Clarke dress.

Ricky Tomlinson

Actor Ricky Tomlinson spent a morning helping customers and stocking shelves at the Breck Road shop on Merseyside. Ricky, who starred in The Royle Family and Brookside, said: "People always think of the Red Cross working overseas but they also help vulnerable people affected by crisis here in Merseyside too.

“It’s terrific that I can go into my local British Red Cross shop and know that the money I help raise could help a family recover from a house fire in Liverpool or a displaced person in the Congo."

Other events included personal shopper days, live mannequins, competitions and Christmas fairs.

Raise money

Red Cross charity shops are a vital source of funds for the charity. All the profits from £1 million fortnight go towards the Red Cross’ work helping vulnerable people in the UK and overseas.

More than 330 Red Cross shops across the UK rely on donations from members of the public to raise these valuable funds. They can convert clothing, discarded gifts, household items, books and DVDs into income for the organisation.
