Why leave home? (5 mins)

Ask the class:

Why would someone leave home?
“Think of positive and negative reasons”

Reasons could include:

> Job
> Family moves
> To be with someone
> To get married
> Family problems
> Natural disasters, ie. floods, earthquakes, hurricanes
> Better life
> Weather
> Unemployment
> Just to travel
> Beliefs
> Crime
> Poverty
> Political climate
> Leaving pollution
> Going to college/university
> Conflict (war)
> Persecution

The reasons for leaving home can be categorised into push or pull factors. ‘Pulling’ reasons tend to be positive, while ‘pushing’ factors are negative.

Asylum seekers and refugees face the push factors when they leave their homes. To avoid persecution, and possible death, they have no choice but to leave.
