It is estimated that as of the end of 2004, there were 1.4 million people living with HIV and AIDS in eastern Europe and central Asia, a nine-fold increase since 1995.
Significant challenges
Declining public health services, soaring rates of drug abuse, lack of safe sex awareness among young people and continuing stigma pose significant challenges.
We are building on our support to Red Cross National Society HIV programmes in Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan working with vulnerable groups, particularly through peer education activities.
In addition, large numbers of people are living in chronic poverty, many facing social exclusion. Our programmes are focusing on:
- socially excluded and older people in Georgia
- street children and vulnerable women in Kyrgyzstan
- community-based health in Kosovo and Turkmenistan
- HIV and TB prevention in Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
