About our governance

The British Red Cross is governed by a board of trustees and supported by our senior management team. The board’s purpose, including sole responsibility for the determination of policies, is to ensure that the Red Cross is effective in working towards achieving our vision, using our resources to maximum effect and upholding our core ethos and values.

Our board, made up of nine members elected from our membership and up to eight members co-opted from outside the Red Cross, is led by our chairman James Cochrane. Sir Nicholas Young leads our senior management team, which is responsible for the day-to-day management of the organisation and meets monthly.

The board’s role and functions are laid out in its Royal Charter and supported by Standing Orders that outline our governance arrangements. Our board meets at least five times a year, one of which includes a joint meeting with our senior management team.
