| In response, the British Red Cross launched the Myanmar (Burma) Cyclone Appeal and thanks to the generosity of everyone who donated, over £1.6 million was raised to help those affected by the cyclone.
The UN reported that approximately 500,000 homes were damaged or destroyed in villages along the south coast of the delta region.
Enormous damage
Winds of over 190 km/hr, heavy rain and floodwater caused enormous damage and following the cyclone there was limited water, and power supplies. Due to the political situation, access into the country was initially very difficult for international aid workers.
The British Red Cross appeal, launched on 5 May 2008, supported the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s response, providing emergency relief including shelter and water to people affected by the cyclone. The British Red Cross also released £30,000 from its Disaster Fund to ensure immediate support to those who needed it most.
In Yangon and the Ayeyarwady delta, people are rebuilding their lives and livelihoods but in many cases major support is needed. The British Red Cross continues to support the Federation and the Myanmar Red Cross Society in their recovery operations to help people get back on their feet.
