Young boy in front of destroyed house

A boy plays in front of his home destroyed by Cyclone Nargis in the town of Bogalay, southwest of Yangon, on 8 May 2008.

Survivors with harrowing tales of villages smashed by Cyclone Nargis paddled wooden boats to the town to find whole streets destroyed, and food and water scarce.

The town of around 50,000 inhabitants was one of the hardest-hit in the Ayeyarwady delta, with rice mills torn apart and fishing boats washed away.
