| Aside from providing funds and expertise to Red Cross National Societies in the region, the British Red Cross provides delegates to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement operations, and was instrumental in setting up the logistical infrastructure for the response to the 2005 hunger crisis in Niger and surrounding countries.
The Niger emergency operation was followed by a successful cash distribution in Tanout, in the northeast of the country, benefiting some 30,000 people. We are also supporting a pilot project to construct cereal banks in 50 communities in the Tanout area.
Elsewhere in the region, programme areas include:
- disaster management
- community based health
- rehabilitation of child soldiers
- community animated peace support.
