West & Central Africa - programme areas

The British Red Cross is involved in projects in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In countries that have been affected by conflict, support is focused on the difficult and painful transition from intense emergency response to longer-term reconstruction and development.Villagers receive cash in a British Red Cross distribution in northeast Niger .
Aside from providing funds and expertise to Red Cross National Societies in the region, the British Red Cross provides delegates to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement operations, and was instrumental in setting up the logistical infrastructure for the response to the 2005 hunger crisis in Niger and surrounding countries.

The Niger emergency operation was followed by a successful cash distribution in Tanout, in the northeast of the country, benefiting some 30,000 people. We are also supporting a pilot project to construct cereal banks in 50 communities in the Tanout area.

Elsewhere in the region, programme areas include:

  • disaster management
  • community based health
  • rehabilitation of child soldiers
  • community animated peace support.
