East Africa - programme areas
| The British Red Cross supports and manages projects in Ethiopia, Sudan and Uganda. | |
| Key areas of operation are; helping communities prepare for disasters; healthcare, with an emphasis on HIV and AIDS; water and sanitation; and ensuring vulnerable people have access to food. | | | | |
| We have provided financial and technical support to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s response to regional drought and food crises in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.
We are working in partnership with the Australian Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross to provide basic services for up to 130,000 displaced people living in a camp in Gereida, south Darfur.
The project provides basic curative and preventive healthcare through a number of outreach clinics, as well as therapeutic and supplementary feeding programmes for hundreds of severely and moderately malnourished children. In addition, the Red Cross repairs and rehabilitates rural water facilities for communities still in their villages.
In northern Uganda, some 1.7 million have been displaced by fighting between the government and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The British Red Cross is providing extensive support to the Ugandan Red Cross relief operation, including sanitation, the distribution of seeds, tools and essential household items, and HIV and AIDS awareness.
Other activities include:
- HIV and AIDS programming in Ethiopia
- water and sanitation programme in Ethiopia
- disaster management in Uganda
