South Asia - programme areas

After the devastation caused by Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh, we have been working with vulnerable coastal communities to relocate them to safer land, providing new homes and support in establishing livelihoods.
In the aftermath of the Pakistan earthquake, the British Red Cross immediately deployed a logistics emergency response unit. In July 2007, we started a recovery programme in the remote Kohistan district, to provide water for 15,000 people.British Red Cross Chief Executive Nick Young in Pakistan with children after the earthquake.
In co-operation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, we have provided funding, expertise and personnel to the massive Red Cross response to the tsunami. Projects include livelihoods support in Sri Lanka and a massive construction operation, re-building more than 450 homes in the Maldives.

Elsewhere in the region, British Red Cross activities include:

  • Clinic support in Pakistan
  • Healthcare and clinic support in Afghanistan
  • Gender development in Nepal and Bangladesh
  • Disaster management in India, Nepal and Bangladesh .
