Keep up to date

The Life. Live it. first aid education kit covers the basic principles on key first aid topics. First aid ‘rights and wrongs’ do not change significantly very often but, if you want to keep up to date with the very latest first aid guidance, check here for any changes.

Strains and sprains – ‘Injuries’ topic

One minor change in clinical guidance, introduced in February 2009, affects the RICE procedure used for the initial treatment of strains and sprains. The ‘C’ in RICE now stands for ‘Comfortable support’ i.e.:

R = Rest the injury
I = Put an ice pack on it
C = Provide comfortable support
E = Elevate the injury

However the principles behind the treatment, including compression, has not changed .

For those wishing to teach the revised RICE procedure, updated slides are provided here:

Please note that, regarding the Interactive Quiz question 'The C in RICE stands for?’ in the ‘Dance Tent’ area, the correct answer from the current multiple choice options is ‘Compression’.
