Why we need your help

Despite generous support received so far, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement still urgently needs an extra £10 million to carry on helping people affected by the Pakistan crisis.A young girl in front of a tent holding a baby
Although many displaced people have returned home, safety and access to basic services remain problematic for many. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) continues to assist people affected by fighting, including those who remain displaced.

"Fighting is still taking place in parts of Malakand Division," said Benno Kocher, head of the ICRC sub-delegation in Peshawar. "Despite substantial progress in some districts over the past few weeks, there remain areas where the population may not be safe and may not be able to obtain food, clean water and medical services."

Displaced civilians

Estimates suggest that since August 2008 the fighting displaced over 2.5 million people, making this the largest and fastest growing displacement worldwide in 15 years. However in recent weeks more than 600,000 people have returned home.

Up to 120,000 people are still living in camps but the majority of displaced people are dispersed throughout North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) and other parts of the country, staying with relatives or in rented accommodation, creating an economic burden on host communities.

Uncertain situation

Although some parts of the  North-West Frontier Province are still experiencing fighting, thousands of people who fled the fighting have returned home. With houses destroyed and the local economy disrupted, many families are likely to face hardship.

Recent fighting in Waziristan has caused thousands more civilians to flee their homes. Many have found refuge with relatives or rented their own accommodation. Some have had to move into a camp. The ICRC has delivered food and other essential goods to about 2,500 displaced people in a bid to stave off further impoverishment.

"These people are running down their savings," explained Imran Mehmood, ICRC field officer. "With aid distributions, we are trying to prevent them from selling their possessions to purchase basic necessities."
