Perceptions of refugees poll

How much do you know about refugees and asylum seekers living in the UK? We asked members of the public five questions and then got the real answers from our head of refugee services, Nick Scott-Flynn. You can listen to our full podcast.

Almost a quarter of those polled thought that more than 100,000 people apply for asylum each year, which is around four times the actual number of applications - 25,670 - submitted in 2008. Only five per cent of those surveyed correctly identified that between 20,000 and 30,000 people apply for UK asylum each year.

What percentage of the world's asylum seekers do you think are in the UK at the present day?

More than 85 per cent of people were unable to name a figure or think the UK is home to more than the actual three per cent of the world's asylum seekers. On average, people think the UK hosts 24 per cent - almost a quarter - of the world's asylum seekers, which is eight times the actual figure.

What type of jobs, if any, do you think refugees most likely did in their country of origin before coming to the UK?

The survey found that most people think refugees are largely low-skilled workers in their country of origin rather than professionals, when in fact the opposite is true.

The vast majority (92 per cent) of people gave at least one positive association, while less than half (49 per cent) gave one or more negative associations. Watch the Look beyond the label videos and see what you think.
