Be a flu friend

Across the UK, Red Cross volunteers are acting as 'flu friends' by delivering medication to those who have been diagnosed with swine flu symptoms – but don't have family or friends on hand to help.

For volunteer Jenny Beard (47), the recent pandemic has been a busy time. She said: “Knowing that I can help vulnerable groups during something like the swine flu pandemic is very rewarding. I like helping people and being part of the community.

She added: “But there’s also an important message here that people should understand. To be prepared for swine flu, people need to identify their own flu friend – a family member, friend or neighbour who can collect antiviral drugs on their behalf.

"That means, should you need help in the future, you won't have to leave your home and run the risk of spreading the virus.”

Who could you help?

It's always a good idea to look out for your neighbours, friends and family – and that's especially true at the moment.

Ask your family members, friends or neighbours – especially those you think might be a bit vulnerable – if they need a flu friend. That way, should they become ill, at least they'll know there's someone they can count on.
