Diaries from the UK and Cambodia

Picture of young boy. Text: How you can help
Samnat, 11, Cambodia

I live in a big house with my brother and sister, mum and dad. I like playing with my friends. My best friend in the village is called Pari and we like playing and dancing together.

  • I take the water for my family from the well near the house. I take a bucket and carry it in this. It is very heavy and it makes me become strong.
  • Next I use the water for washing. This is how most of the water is used – for washing and bathing my family and I.
  • My parents use the water for cooking – this means that the water is boiled.
  • I cannot swim but we sometimes play in the water at the small river. Sometimes we drink the water in the river when we are playing but we know we should not because it isn’t clean and can make you sick.
  • I bathe again in the evening.

In the UK it is different because we take the water from the well and in the UK they turn on a tap. I don’t know if they use more or less water than we do but the water in the UK is better than the water in Cambodia.

I think we use more water here. The biggest ways we waste water in this country is probably for me, water fights in the summer! And also people who have those things that spray water on the grass.

We use less water here because in Cambodia they have to walk quite far to get it and then carry it all back. If I had to walk to get my water I wouldn’t use as much as I do now.
