Responding to emergencies

We helped a number of countries prepare for disasters. Our three years of support to the Syrian Red Crescent bore fruit when it was able to help more than 65,000 refugees from the conflict in Lebanon and Israel.

In Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, we worked on 2,396 new houses, completing 284 by the end of 2006. We also gave £3.17 million in grants to more than 8,000 households across the region.

Thousands of survivors from 16 new overseas disasters received emergency help such as shelter, food and clean water from the Red Cross.

In the UK, we responded to 35 major incidents and 1,830 other fire and emergency support service callouts.

We equipped more than 387,000 people with life-saving first aid skills.

We also traced 321 families separated by natural disasters and conflict and delivered 852 Red Cross Messages between loved ones.
