British Red Cross statement on changes to the asylum system

On 2 March 2026, the UK government announced changes to the asylum system.

Mubeen Bhutta, British Red Cross Director of Policy, Research and Advocacy, said:

“We are deeply concerned about the changes the government is proposing to our asylum system. The plans will leave people in need of protection and safety in a perpetual state of limbo, where they can neither focus on recovery or plan for their future. Evidence from where this has been implemented elsewhere shows it leads to real human suffering and holds back integration in communities.

“We must never forget that behind the headlines are men, women and children who have already endured the trauma of war and persecution. We know through our work that what people forced to leave their homes want most is to rebuild their lives, live with dignity and contribute to their communities. We need a fair and compassionate asylum system, one that aligns with the UK’s long and proud history of providing protection for refugees, particularly in these uncertain times.”
