British Red Cross supports British nationals returning from the Middle East

18 March 2025

The British Red Cross has been supporting government-led repatriation efforts.

The British Red Cross has been supporting government-led repatriation efforts and working closely with airport authorities and local partners to assist British nationals returning to the UK following the recent escalation of hostilities across the Middle East

British Red Cross volunteers were on hand as the first repatriation flights landed in London, offering psychosocial support, practical guidance and a calm, reassuring presence for those arriving, including families with children.

Since then, teams have been deployed to Stansted and Gatwick airports to welcome passengers, provide refreshments, offer emotional support, signpost people to essential services, and help arrange onward travel. Local teams across the country remain on standby to ensure support is available wherever it may be needed.

Specialist volunteers from the British Red Cross Psychosocial Support Team have also been working with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) overseas. Over seven days, volunteers deployed to Muscat to support British nationals ahead of evacuation flights from Oman to the UK, as well as assisting FCDO Rapid Deployment Teams.

When British nationals are caught up in a crisis overseas, British Red Cross psychosocial support volunteers are trained to provide emotional and practical assistance, considering the holistic needs of individuals, couples and families. In recent years, teams have supported British nationals after the Air India plane crash, assisted tourists during the Rhodes wildfires and deployed to Dubai to support Afghans evacuated from Kabul airport.

It is estimated that around 300,000 Britons have been affected by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. The British Red Cross has supported so far at Stansted and Gatwick airports, with work continuing in close coordination with local authorities and multi‑agency partners.

Garth Smith, Head of Resilience at the British Red Cross, said:

“In moments like this, people want to feel safe and supported after a difficult journey home - whether they’re facing challenges or simply need guidance, our teams are ready to help.

“Despite the uncertainty and high levels of psychosocial need, our volunteers have been at airports in both the UK and Oman to offer a warm welcome, a listening ear and practical help to anyone who needs it. We will continue working closely with partners to ensure everyone returning receives the support they need.”
