5 steps to leave a charitable gift in your will

1. Decide what type of gift you want to leave

If you’d like to leave a charitable gift in your will, there are three main types of gifts you can leave:

• Percentage of your estate
  You can choose a percentage of what remains after other gifts and expenses have been paid. This is known as a residuary gift. Many people choose this option as it keeps their gift in line with inflation.
• Fixed amount of cash
  You set the amount of cash you’d like to leave. This is known as a pecuniary gift. Its value may change over time due to inflation.
• Specific item
  You can choose to leave a specific item, such as jewellery, furniture or property – this can feel more personal.


2. Make sure your loved ones are provided for

Most supporters leave a gift to charity only once they’ve ensured their family and friends are taken care of in their will.

3. Prepare the key details for your will

Before you meet with a solicitor or start your online will-writing session, you’ll need to gather some information. Here’s what to note down beforehand:

• Charity’s registered name and address
• Registered charity number*
• Type of gift and amount you want to leave
• Purpose of the gift - do you want to give to a specific area of our work or where it will have the greatest impact through a general gift?

4. Add the gift to your will

You can include a gift to charity when you first write your will or update an existing one. If you’re leaving a gift in your will to the British Red Cross you can get your will written for free either in person or online. Whatever service you use, you’ll be guided on the wording so you can record your wishes accurately.

5. Make your will legally valid

To make your will legally binding, you’ll need to be over 18, of sound mind and not under pressure to create the will. You’ll need to sign it in front of two witnesses (over 18 and not beneficiaries). Your will-writing service or solicitor will guide you through the process and make sure everything is legal. Once it’s signed, keep your will somewhere safe and let someone you trust (like your executor) know where it’s stored.
