Closed emergency appeals

After the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar in March 2025, the Myanmar Red Cross supported families who had lost everything, building 125 transitional shelters across 13 wards and two villages in Sagaing Township, Myanmar.

These semi-permanent shelters included two bedrooms, a living space, a separate kitchen area and basic WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) facilities.

With support from IFRC and other Movement partners, the Myanmar Red Cross prioritised the most vulnerable families through a community-led selection process.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, the Myanmar Earthquake appeal also helped provide emergency shelter items including tents and warm blankets, to more than 157,000 people.

Kyi Kyi Myint is 70 years old. When the earthquake struck, her building collapsed in minutes. Her husband was trapped under the rubble and tragically died. While trying to rescue him, Kyi Kyi Myint suffered a broken leg.

After the disaster, the Red Cross-supported shelter has provided her with much-needed stability, by helping her construct a more robust home. “The house built by the Red Cross has everything we need,” she says. “There is electricity, and even the stone rings for storing water. If I had to build it myself, I would never be able to afford it.”

She now sleeps in the new house, and there is also space for her daughters when they return home.

“I always pray for the health and wellbeing of the Red Cross donors,” she says. “Receiving this house when we had nowhere to live feels like stepping into the shade of a tree after walking in the heat. It has brought us peace.”
