The Myanmar earthquake 2025

Appeal launched on 28 March 2025 and closed on 27 March 2026

On 28 March 2025, central Myanmar was rocked by a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake, followed by a 6.7 magnitude aftershock.

It caused widespread devastation:

• 3,600 deaths.
• 5,561 injured.
• 120,000+ houses damaged or destroyed. 
• Families were separated and left without shelter, water or food. 
• Healthcare facilities were damaged.

The quake struck five regions: Sagaing, Mandalay, Southern Shan, Naypyidaw, and Bago. These areas, home to 17.2 million people, were already burdened by complex ongoing humanitarian challenges.

Thanks to our generous supporters, we were able to release funds from our  Disaster Fund and launch the Myanmar Earthquake Appeal to support the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s response. The appeal has now closed.

How your donations made a difference

The Myanmar Red Cross Society responded immediately. They supported with search and rescue efforts and provided healthcare, food, water and shelter. 

670 volunteers were mobilised locally for an quick and effective response.

Your donation helped support their work to reach people in need:

• More than 137,000 people have received food and livelihood assistance, helping families regain income and stability. 
• Over 1.3 million litres of safe drinking water have been distributed, ensuring communities have access to clean water as they rebuild. 
• More than 230,000 people have received health care, delivered through mobile clinics, first aid teams, and community health outreach. 
• Over 94,000 people have been provided with shelter and shelter‑related assistance, supporting families whose homes were damaged or destroyed. 
• 71,294 people have been reached with cash assistance, enabling families to meet urgent needs.

Long-term support for Myanmar continues

While the dedicated appeal has closed, our work in Myanmar will continue. Recovery will be a long and difficult process and will take many years. When the earthquake struck, communities were already recovering from unprecedented floods caused by Typhoon Yagi in July 2024. The Myanmar Red Cross Society, supported by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, will be there to help for as long as we are needed.

The Disaster Fund supports people affected by disasters and emergencies around the world. 

Right now, it's supporting people in Sudan, the Middle East and last year helped those affected by the devastation of Hurricane Melissa.
