The Met Office's charity partnership with the British Red Cross
The British Red Cross and the Met Office launched a partnership in October 2025, bringing together two organisations that are committed to strengthening community resilience and helping people to prepare for climate related crises.
Climate research shows that the UK is already seeing more regular and more severe extreme weather, such as heatwaves, droughts and heavy rainfall. These changes raise the risk of flooding, increase heat related illness and deaths and can disrupt the essential services that people depend on every day.
By bringing together our network of volunteers and long experience in humanitarian aid with the Met Office s expertise in weather and climate, this partnership aims to improve how prepared communities are and help people to get ready for and recover from disasters.
Our partnership creates new ways for Met Office employees to get involved with the British Red Cross, including volunteering with us, taking part in fundraising events and helping to raise awareness of our work
The Red Cross and climate change
Climate change is already transforming everyday life. Heatwaves are growing hotter and more frequent, rainfall is becoming heavier, and storms are increasing in severity.
Extreme weather is taking a real toll on people. Homes are being flooded, livelihoods are being destroyed and lives are being lost.
The Red Cross supports people in 190 countries worldwide, helping communities to prepare for extreme weather so they can get ahead of climate disasters.
In the UK and around the world, Red Cross teams are on the ground helping people to prepare for and recover from crisis.
From cash and vouchers to help people to replace what they've lost, to essential supplies like clothing and clean water and emotional and welfare support, we are there when disaster strikes.
Around the world we are helping people to prepare for future disasters too. We are investing in long-term preparedness, helping communities to better withstand future shocks. Working with local authorities, volunteers and neighbours on local planning and coordination, we can make sure people are ready long before crisis hits.
We are delighted to be partnering with the British Red Cross as our chosen charity for the next few years.
Their humanitarian mission and values align closely with our own purpose and commitment to helping people stay safe and thrive. This partnership will allow us to combine our expertise, improving community resilience in the face of climate change.
