When making a journey to find safety, remember these important things to keep yourself safe: 


To keep safe before travelling

  1. Communicate your intended route to your friends and family
  2. Take a picture of your passport and send it to your friends and family
  3. Set up a buddy system to monitor and help each other
  4. Be aware that not everyone can be trusted
  5. Be careful of offers that are too good to be true
  6. Remember that the emergency number while in the European Union is 112

To keep safe while travelling

  1. Use public transport where possible
  2. Use a buddy system to monitor and help each other
  3. Agree to a code word with your buddy, friends and family, so you can secretly alert them if you're scared
  4. Try to travel in a group
  5. If you get into a vehicle, ask permission to take a photo of the driver's license and number plate. Send this to your buddy, friends or family
  6. If you are feeling unsafe, seek support from the Red Cross, another aid organisation or the authorities
  7. Keep family and friends informed about your journey and location
  8. If something seems suspicious, follow your instinct and trust yourself
  9. If in danger, call the emergency number while in the European Union, which is 112
